Black Rainbows - Stellar Prophecy (2016)

2016  Heavy Psych Sounds

Black Rainbows are back with Stellar Prophecy that give us some differences between their previous works.
The riffage is the same but the fuzz is something vintage here and there.
Electrify is a quite-less song a la Monster Magnet, Woman has an electro-blues feel with a nice organ  and a beautiful guitar solo with wha, Golden Widow a space suite, more relaxing: Monster Magnet again.
Evil Snake is back at a stoner territory, It's Time To Die give us echoes of Cactus and 'modern' stoner, same for Keep The Secret that give us something of Fu Manchu.
The records ends with The Travel that must be considered the twin of Golden Widow.

What we can say about this album ?
It seems that Black Rainbows learned very well to wrap such albums, it works to the fan/music lovers, but all is done earlier yet by some grand masters.
We couldn't ever say that this is a bad album o badly tailored, but we remain with a bitter taste in ours mouth by considering that their approach is made by resemble here and there without a distinctive feature.

Void Generator - Supersound (2014)

2014 CD Phonosphera Records ph06
2014 LP Phonosphera Records ph06v

It is not easy to write a review of the great italian band Void Generator for its almost unknown content. You can't know what VG will do the next time and how their release will sound. If you know the previous releases, Phantom Hell and Soar Angelic, Collision ep, We Have Found The Space and so on, you should expect something different from a Supersound like that.
We are talking about 7 super songs playing a shorter time that Phantom Hell facing with a superfuzzed guitars, a super grooving drumming, very improved vocals and a different direction that we could call an heavy psych with a range of nuances.
Behind My Door is an heavy pysch song running a weird timing and a fantastic guitar solo at the end. Synapsex is a sort of stoner rush where the band shows all its playing expertise with a very nice middle organ work. Master Of The Skies is a sort of occult/sixties rock reminiscence running on a waltz timing...oh how good is this song ! Check the guitar solo, it's a masterpiece. Here the vocals seem close to James Douglas Morrison.
Then What Are You Doin', a cover of McChurch Soundroom, that is organ driven (remember: you'll find mr. Enrico Cosimi on keyboards...), super groovy and super sixties. Hidden Orbit is a sort of modern heavy song lying on a super odd heavy riffing going into a super grooving verse. Universal Winter is an acoustic and super lonely psychedelic song that breaks your groovy mood had before. Globular Cluster is a sort of homage to Monster Magnet of Superjudge.
Ultimately you'll find here: heavy psych, stoner, prog, psychedelia, doomish mood, super recording, super playing, super production, super groove. A Supersound.
Don't miss it, this is one of the best release around and it is intended to be that for a long time.

INSIDER - …Vibrations From the Tapes…(2012)

(Phonosphera Records ph04 - 2012)

When I heard about the new release of INSIDER from Pescara, true champions of our national rock, I could not help but get me a copy of their latest work '... Vibrations From the Tapes ...' published for the always more interesting roman label Phonoshera Records. Given that the INSIDER started out way back in 1996, believed to be extinct after the last great 'Simple Water Drops' in 2005 (one of the best Italian recordings in circulation) and instead come back into vogue with the current release, which consists of 5 tracks completely improvised and clearly recorded in a sort of rehearsal room with a pair of capacitors mic (the material is from 2007!). The master was made by Gianmarco Iantaffi, or the guitarist of Void Generator. Imagine a river of psychedelic guitar with dressing of synth and all sorts of vintage sonic generator, five grooves that will surely please you if you do like rock. You will find a continuous variation in dynamics, interventions wha, just continuous themes and guitar, and a citation of Hendrix and space effects throughout the cd. If you love the genre does not miss it.

Farflung & Black Rainbows (Split) 2012

Longfellow Deeds

Yet another release from the french Longfellow Deeds who composes a split in which the protagonists are the smericans Farflung (around since 1995) and the prolific italian Black Rainbows, which, certainly arouses curiosity. And it would expect space shades in such a disc. 'Lupine' does not betray the expectations. A good guitar riff (not so heavy) introduces a melody typical of the genre, filtered voice and simple and attractive riff so that the piece at 2:00 does not say anything special. It 'still a nice piece. 'Punching Hole in the Twilight' could easily be a piece of Monster Magnet's Dopes To Infinity or even Powertrip but less hard or quietly a classic piece of Hawkwind too. 'No Circuit' is another beautiful piece throughout space, nothing original but commendable. Ultimately, a good space approach for Farflung with an eye aimed at catchy enough issues. In such a context you would expect that the whole album is along the same lines but the Black Rainbows open their share with 'Let it Shine', which does not differ at all from that proposed in previous work, granite heavy psych riff rather attractive, very compressed guitar and usual space work with a tape echo and monophonic synth. Let's say a piece of classical repertoire with hints space. The next song, whose title is really intriguing: 'The River, The Moon, The White Lake, The Megaelectrofantafuzzspace' is more space and rhythmic, imagine a very similar riff to 'Get on the Snake' Soundgarden and you have a precise idea of what you'll hear, certainly the best piece of the whole split. At about three minutes the track is back to the old love of BR, the heavy psychedelia, a sort of interlude before returning to the previous riff that we like. It closes the split 'The Devil & The Dream', which still evokes echoes of Monster Magnet with heavy steps typical of BR. Here is a demonstration of how some italian groups can be better than band from overseas.

Tuber - Tuber ep (2010)

I believe is the first time that I write a review of songs available in digital only, without the aid of a label I mean. The greeks Tuber: Yannis Gerostathos - Guitars, Nikos Gerostathos - Drums, Paris Fragkos - Bass Guitar recorded this ep of 4 pieces at the Parallel Universe studios and are produced by their own drummer. This is a curious thing, we understand why reading these lines. Virtually unknown to most, according to the news that I was able to collect should be even from Crete (could you imagine a jam with the minotaur ?!...) the Tuber stands out from the first listen. Imagine a mix of post rock and psychedelia flavored with something personal. A clean guitar draws the opening melody to which the battery draws a simple but effective groove, a second guitar alternate to first clean guitar and together they chase parts more or less tense by changing the sound into distorted  according to the different moments. The delay on the guitars provides the whole suond, where are grafted space moments and other lapping stoner areas, without ever really reach them. Take the first two albums by Pharaoh Overlord add the more rock moments of the ep and imagine them relaxing in  space atmospheres and you have the Tuber. A pleasant discovery, also considered that the island of Crete has never been a hotbed of rock bands. Of course, the quality of distorted guitars is not the greatest and most importantly, the drums is more than a few times 'back' but the ep has its both a good dose of personality that a 'shot' easily addictive. We look forward to maybe a full-length product in a suited manner to the artistic level expressed.

White Hills - Frying on This Rock (2012)

Thrill Jockey
THRILL 298

The americans White Hills, after 4 album from 2011, propose this 'Frying on This Rock' accompanied by his horrible cover. The White Hills consist of Dave W. (guitars) and Ego Sensation (bass), Antronhy (drummer Julian Cope) effects and backing vocals, and their live/studio drummer Nick Name.
Ready ... off you go with 'Pads of Light' (hence the cover?) Which leads immediately to a cross between Hawkwind and Monster Magnet first manner. Not bad. 'Stomp Robot' really makes the idea of something robotic, mechanical and circular. A note/chord remains undeterred and dominating for nearly 12 minutes, when not accompanied by sound effects and all sorts of noise. An experiment to review. 'You Dream You See' begins with the same agreement, but in the same tone and voice over sixties fuzz, on time wha (read: nonsensical); stretches of Hawkwind and the fuzz of Raw Power Stooges. Guitar solo to forget. Interestingly, however, the rest of the piece that produces from approximately 2:40 minutes in a groove where the fuzz disappears and is replaced by a space concept exasperated but effective. 'Song of Everything' brings some punk-hardcore (!) mood with modeled guitars almost space (usually sixties fuzz) added that end up soon in a groove down to the cellar of his grandfather. From the minute 3:00 we are back in a much more relaxed environment with synths, effects and background vocals that seem a random set. From about 8:00 minute you are back with fuzz guitars. Closes the platter 'I Write Letters Thousand (Pulp on Bone)' with relaxed synth (80 sound), the battery repeats the same fill for centuries, the guitar reminds Makoto Kawabata when he lost consciousness ... and so up to the end. An album with no rhyme or reason, any ideas scattered, poorly played.

Electric Moon - The Doomsday Machine (2011)

Electric Moon - The Doomsday Machine (2011)
(Nasoni Records 118)

Curious are the ways of psychedelia ... The german Electric Moon, who would not be other than Mr. Sula Bassana holding the Sulatron Records, signed for the Nasoni, also german. Completing the line-up Lucy Neudeck [Komet aka Lulu] (bass, vocals) and Pablo Carnival (drums). Authors of eight albums in two years (!), Electric Moon in a short time got a good exposure at the teutonic and european thriving kraut-psychedelic scene. Opens the title track, which immediately makes us understand what we are listening, a kind of modern Hawkwind, in darker colors, almost claustrophobic. Fuzz, wah, voice 'back', echoes in the background of analog synths and tape echo as a classic. From 11:30 minute the piece pegs into cosmic effects of various kinds and then set off towards 16:30. It seems something as the wildest Void Generator like side. Kleiner Knaller begins with a good delayed guitar game, then the riff (somewhat uncertain on the beat ...) then leads to wha evolutions already seen in the previous song, only here the song is 5 minutes long. Spaceman opens with an introductory space echo, which introduces a rather dark mood, it seems a constant in the disc. Except that here drums is slightly at odds with time too. The rhytm is relentless and the platter begins to emerge as rather extreme. Around 5:30 the mood dies down a little but a background of distorted guitar reminds us that the tension is not over. The piece, contrary to my expectations is softened towards the end and slips into dreamy tones. Stardust Service and Feigenmonolog are of the same cloth. A disc is not exactly the 'quiet' which at times seems a little repetitive but that will make you travel, especially if you have taken hallucinogenic drugs. In short, it's up to you, if you still have good grass for the New Year, smoke it and let me know.

My Brother the Wind - I Wash My Soul in the Stream of Infinity (2011)

My Brother the Wind - I Wash My Soul in the Stream of Infinity
(Transubstans Trans090 - 2011)

Completano la line-up Mathias Danielsson (guitar), Ronny Eriksson (bass) e Tomas Eriksson (drums). Giustamente inseriti in un contesto space/prog i quattro scandinavi propongono sei pezzi rilassati e rilassanti. Fire ! Fire !! Tracce di Amon Duul possono essere scorte here and there...The Mediator Between Head and Hands Must Be the Heart ricalca esattamente il mood immodificato che caratterizza il sound del presente platter. Idem per la finale I Wash My Soul in the Stream of Infinity.

The brothers of the wind come from Sweden and share the guitarist Nicklas Barker with the most popular Anekdoten, a known progressive band. Completing the line-up Mathias Danielsson (guitar), Ronny Eriksson (bass) and Tomas Eriksson (drums). Rightly placed in a space / prog, the four Scandinavian propose six relaxed and relaxing pieces. Fire! Fire! is an outstanding piece always seeming to solve any minute for 13 minutes, but it does not happen. The tension is always around the corner. Pagan Moonbeam is a 'short' acoustic tour and vaguely Eastern. Neither of the two songs gives us some important innovations. The album is well played. Traces of Amon Duul can be glimpsed here and there... The Mediator Between Head and Heart Hands Must Be The exact reflection of the unchanged mood characterizing the sound of this platter. The same hyper relaxed atmospheres can be found in the following  Torbjörn Abelli. However it is slightly more eventful Under Crimson Skies in which echoes of Amon Duul are back. With every passing minute song takes up the atmospheres of the previous narcotic steps, and doesn't differ from the intention already seen. Same for the final I Wash My Soul In The Stream of Infinity. In conclusion, a lackluster record, which leaves no room for interpretation whatsoever. Maybe a little 'too much' for our ears.

Void Generator - Phantom Hell and Soar Angelic

Void Generator - Phantom Hell and Soar Angelic (2010)

Phonosphera (ph01)

Since I am, I'll try with another review of another italian group that, in my opinion, deserves the utmost respect. After a couple of self-produced works as stoner / psych / space flavor, the romans Void Generator get it really big...Phantom Hell and Soar Angelic is a complex platter, varied, unusual, not easy to describe. To obtain a more articulate idea of the CD, may be it would be useful to go out on the web and read many reviews out almost half the world. The CD consists of four pieces, of which three 'regular' and a untitled ghost track (my car stereo reads as track 4 'Retinoic Dust'). Four suites of different flavor but held together by a solid space base combining the various souls - rock, stoner, psychedelic, prog - of the songs. Skip to the eye, (and ear), the unusual duration of the songs, never under 13 minutes. Two things: either the VG are 4 crazy guys or 4 that know their stuff (or both ...!) Classical line-up with guitar, bass, drums and keyboards which must be added a mysterious Bob the Rich credited as spiritual guidance, Sinclair docet ... The recording of the four pieces is certainly better than the average of the releases haven't been produced a major, therefore, an aproval to the new label Phonosphera. It starts with Message From the Galactic Federation that opens with a riff in 13/8 that dust off your face. Some calls this stoner intro, but it isn't , very soon the openings of the guitars and keyboards veering towards a more progressive path and - sometimes - post metal. A mix that I cannot find elsewhere. In three minutes already runs a series of feelings difficult to place stylistically. The starting/central riff, which is repeated as the preparation of various changes, flows into a break of voice ending in a space flavoured fade-out. Within four minutes a rock song is over. Not at all. A new bridge will lead us into quasi post-metal territories space seasoned. Two more verses of voice switch to the main riff then, a post metal bridge again that this time opens onto a carpet made by guitar and keyboard that we have to consider as the central part (!) of the song, melancholy, with a terrible 'feel', voice and drama dominate this area of the song. You can notice the genius of the piece at the output of the central area that resume the previous post-metal area...and we only are at 8:00. It starts again nearky like the beginning with a 13/8 beat with variations and bridge that come before two more voice verses. Then a break from wich stands out a new round, odd and obsessive riff in a minor key with unbalanced and echoed guitars. The bass giutar counterpoints the melody, the drums runs on time and the piece fades into a catastrophe of cyclical effects that give you a sense of void...just a Void Generator. The second song, The Morning, is a rather simple psichedelic falvored composition, very instinctive than the first track. A guitar opens holding a groove rhytmically identic up to the end of the piece (a sort of Moondog madness). The voice sweetly tells gone stories while drums pulses by the book. After a couple of sung verses the song slightly increase in intensitiy, not so much though. After that, the song literally sinking in a very quiet central part, halfaw between a post-rock composition and a typical reflextion of a second way Motorpsycho. Again the guitar heralds the arrive of the voice, now more present, plays with the usual three chords (3) and the drum shaker announcing new feelings invigorating the strenght of the beat. Over the verses, the song grows until the guitars and keyboard clog the headroom of the signal...just before of the final part a heartbreaking voice chorus drag us into a stoned psychedelic vortex, dreamy and languid supported by the overdubbed guitars and a keyboard dying in a catatonic final. Background melodies intertwine til the end of the things. The pianissimo final of the keyboard give us the feeling of the calm after the storm...and we're only at half cd ! The gray flavor of the void that raped our mind above, is interrupted by the solemn gait almost unexpected of the third piece, 'The Eternaut'. The repeated and prolonged pulsing of a muddy bass lead us back to the reality with a slow and soothing groove that is able to give a rest to our ears and, at the same time, set us on alert. The groove is just based on a couple of chords, one resolving and the other tensive. After a minute or two an odd accent break burst in that immediately introducing a damn riff a la Monster Magnet. Then comes the voice that strstches for a couple of laps with creepy plots. Now's the moment of a sort of chorus having a pulsating bass and the voice that urges on the title of the song. A bridge slows down the atmosphere up to a cut bringing back to the starting chords where the keyboard set an hypnotic, and moderately twisted, solo greatly supported by the rhythm section of the VG. A sort of evoluted prog. Then again the melancholy bridge interrupted by a series of odd compulsories, a timeless suspension, almost free, then again with the Monster Magnet's riff. But here the voice doubles, harmonized a diatonic third above and the song 'pushes' more and more, if possible. At this point the chorus doubles the duration, the keyboard describes melodies using long notes, the drum doubles the beat and the song falls into a guitar solo that would not know how to describe. A stream of notes played with a space echo that is all 'feel'. At times it seems Ollie Halsall from Patto, at times Page, at times...I don't know! What is certain is that, while the basis chords stops and the VG play only the accents that are left free for full enjoyment of the whole distortion (with a monstrous bass), the guitar keeps on playing the schizophrenic solo the keyboard counterpoints with deliberately vintage sounds and a vortex of spacey effetcs lead us to something midway between despair and induced hypnosis. Do not use drugs while listening, please.
As if this were not enough the VG offer us a ghost track of about 24 minutes while the vortex of the space echo of The Eternaut leaves us speechless, tiny sound movements escape from the craved silence that anticipates the last fourth track. Lo-fi guitar loop repeated with tiny games of interlocking delay recall embryonic noises kept to a wire volume. At some point, however, the song suddenly explodes and all the instruments screaming the arpeggiated chords of the guitar supported by an Oberheim and by a guitar solo that leads to a very pissed Gilmour. A slow gait of the song - at times - remember the style of Warning (Watching From a Distance). Meanwhile, a new guitar solo overlaps the first playing with the long chords and measured that give the effect of drawing attention so unreal, from which escape is almost impossible. Then it breaks into a sort of guitar 'central solo' , a bit louder than the others (that still resonate) taking the form of a real tema almost metal, pentatonic, nervous, rubato and lyrical at the same time. After this heartbreaking solo comes in a doomish vocals interspersed with metallic guitar phrases. After a series of four verses a series of guitar solos overlap right and left, with effects of various kinds. An incredible and ordered sonic chaos, followed by other sung verses, when the space component of the band takes over, analog and digital sounds pervade all until a underwater keyboard gait describing a long and sad melody as a perfect closure the delirium that precedes it.
Silence.

The End.

Not at all.
A low volume guitar describes chipped doom and space echoed melodies, warns us that perhaps will never end ...
