Causa Sui - Return To Sky (2016)

Brava El Praiso Records that stands one of the most interesting European labels and even more. Very well-finished art, never common, a particular attention to the material and an high-end brand.
Return To Sky from Causa Sui belongs to the current that nowadays we will call 'jam', 'prog', 'psych' ecc.
Nice the outcoming mood but nothing new, obviously. Stoner hints, old sounds, soft moods that suddenly turn into sixties dynamics, echoes of Colour Haze here and there lead us with warmth.
What we can say, here Causa Sui hit common roads but genre lovers won't dislike for sure.
A release to be safe with, aware of the merit and defects of the current genre scene.

Void Generator - Supersound (2014)

2014 CD Phonosphera Records ph06
2014 LP Phonosphera Records ph06v

It is not easy to write a review of the great italian band Void Generator for its almost unknown content. You can't know what VG will do the next time and how their release will sound. If you know the previous releases, Phantom Hell and Soar Angelic, Collision ep, We Have Found The Space and so on, you should expect something different from a Supersound like that.
We are talking about 7 super songs playing a shorter time that Phantom Hell facing with a superfuzzed guitars, a super grooving drumming, very improved vocals and a different direction that we could call an heavy psych with a range of nuances.
Behind My Door is an heavy pysch song running a weird timing and a fantastic guitar solo at the end. Synapsex is a sort of stoner rush where the band shows all its playing expertise with a very nice middle organ work. Master Of The Skies is a sort of occult/sixties rock reminiscence running on a waltz timing...oh how good is this song ! Check the guitar solo, it's a masterpiece. Here the vocals seem close to James Douglas Morrison.
Then What Are You Doin', a cover of McChurch Soundroom, that is organ driven (remember: you'll find mr. Enrico Cosimi on keyboards...), super groovy and super sixties. Hidden Orbit is a sort of modern heavy song lying on a super odd heavy riffing going into a super grooving verse. Universal Winter is an acoustic and super lonely psychedelic song that breaks your groovy mood had before. Globular Cluster is a sort of homage to Monster Magnet of Superjudge.
Ultimately you'll find here: heavy psych, stoner, prog, psychedelia, doomish mood, super recording, super playing, super production, super groove. A Supersound.
Don't miss it, this is one of the best release around and it is intended to be that for a long time.

Insider - Event Horizon (2013)

2013 CD Andruid Records (AR 001)

After 'Vibrations From The Tapes' Insider are back with Event Horizon this time produced for their own label Andruid Records.
Ranalli Bros. and Stefano Di Rito realize - alleluia - a different work. Do not expect anything of what you have already heard from the band of Pescara (Italy).
The platter is completely instrumental and runs in eight tracks by the apparent heavy metal prog flavor. Imagine a series of metal riffs that run, varying, on a series of temporal and melodic scansion constantly in motion, some would say having no chorus.
A proposal that is more cerebral than directly emotional.
The effort, I assure you, it's huge. For sure, if you can't live without Fu-Manchu then forget about it as soon as possible, but if you are going to listen something 'different', that broadens your sensory faculties, then take a look at the odd timing, the distortion of the Pro Co Rat golden-era and the architecture of the old prog stuff.
On the other side, the result is not equal to the effort, because - undoubtedly - listening to Event Horizon is not the easiest and relaxing thing in the world. In the long run it becomes difficult to remain 'on the piece'.
An edition as ep, with a careful choice of the pieces, (3/4) at the maximum, would have been more efficient and nothing would take away the intrinsic value of the work.

Mr. Peter Hayden - Faster Than Speed (2010)

2010 CD Winter Talvi-11
2012 Vinyl LP Mikrofoni 001

Koivisto, S. Kuosmanen, M. Marjamäki, T. Santamaa e V.Vatanen e, altrettanto fortunatamente, è piuttosto complicato spiegarvi cosa suonino. Occhio a Mr. Peter Hayden, potrebbe esplodere in qualsiasi momento.

Only recently that I've - thankfully - approached the finns Mr. Peter Hayden. This quintet includes the following guys: L. Kivela, JP. Koivisto, S. Kuosmanen, M. Marjamäki, T. Santamaa and V.Vatanen and just as fortunately, is quite complicated to explain what they play. The CD is simply composed of two super-long tracks (however, never long as the great french Overmars), but that's not the point. Faster Than Speed of Mr. Peter Hayden: got the repetitiveness of their neighbour Circle, a sound that reveals clearly the finnish metal, vaguely the psychedelic sense of the orchestral Motorpsycho, a sax that brings Crimson echoes, yet they are nothing of the kind. Among other things, they have a sufficient command of their instruments, which, although not necessary, certainly does not hurt in this era of approximation, they could show and after-school so many more famous names. If you love only those classic things might not like it, but if you're sick of the usual things then you can not go wrong. Put your eyes on Mr. Peter Hayden, it could explode at any moment. (They are also distributed in Italy by our local enterprising Phonosphera!).

Stoned Jesus - Seven Thunders Roar (2012)

Moon MR 5401-2 IM 021

Dispiace perché la personalità affiora here and there...'Indian' sembra un pezzo prog...si, prog ! O no ?!

We can not always review bands comin' from the usual 5/6 countries, except Italy. The Ukrainians Stoned Jesus [Sid (bass), Vadim (drums), Igor "Prog-Jester" Sidorenko (guitar, vocals)] reach their second album titled Seven Thunders Roar thanks to the Moon, the ukranian label of Kiev. Most of the 'music employees' calls them stoner metal (what the f**** will ever be...). Personally, I remember their first job as not excellent but not to throw away. The first track 'Bright Like the Morning' does not convince me: too childish, not well played and where the rhythm section has a heavy responsibility in terms of groove. The second track 'Electric Mistress' leads us instead into doom territories where we find the analogy with the piece just finished. The melodic idea is not bad, but the implementation leaves a little 'done'. The voice is not convincing, the mix either, but it's the playing in general that's too bad. I am really sorry because the personality emerges here and there ... 'Indian' ... it seems a bit prog, yes prog! I know it's strange, but true. At about 1:00 Indian goes to sixties environments. Here you can find The Idea, 'there are no saints' (loool). 'I'm the Mountain' is an acoustic track (so it would seem to me more a prog band than a stoner metal...stoner metal ... ... mah!?) that turns with every passing second. It becomes electric and distorted and then falls down again, but differently. Well, if a guy is named Igor "Prog-Jester" Sidorenko there is a reason. Or not! Guys, the song is good. It has its own autonomy and balanced. The instruments are out of tune but the piece is consistent. The rhythm section is playing the surf over the timing but it all comes anyway. The mix of the various instruments seems did by the gas station man... but 200 groups more like that are really welcome, so instead of the usual hackneyed. To the chagrin of many reviewers either 'Stormy Monday' is not a stoner metal piece. It is not easy to make you understand what exactly the Stoned Jesus are doing because - fortunately - they sound a little on their own f*** businness, with their own style, vaguely prog, vaguely grunge. In essence, we have the foundations. What is most important - being yourself - they do not miss it. They would need a 'performance' school, music school, in short. He either lacks only a producer to coordinate everything and it would definitely a nice hearing.

Motorpsycho - Strings of Stroop: Live at Effenaar (2011)

May 7, 1999, track A2: April 21, 2000, tracks B1 and B2: May 23, 2010.

Due to the substantial unavailability of the hereby vinyl recordered to celebrate 40 years of Effenaar, I'm going to review this disc - released only on vinyl - Strings of Stroop that contains 5 live tracks recorded in Holland in different periods. Limited edition of 500 units, which reached the market quotations out of the common sense, has the following dating tracklist: A1 Track: May 7, 1999, track A2: April 21, 2000, tracks B1 and B2: May 23, 2010. The tracciaB3 that does not appear on the cover, is May 4, 2006 and is a cover of Queen (from News of the World, 1977).
It starts with Psychonaut (from Trust Us, 1998) that gives us the 'usual' Norwegians ramblings left with plenty of room for improvisation. We continue with Go To California from 2000 (Phanerothyme 2001), the smart-pop version of the Motor. Beautiful proof of the ensemble with voices harmonized with care even during a live set.
It follows Whole Lotta Diana (from Child of the Future 2009) that - it seems - the less successful song of the platter, perhaps because it belongs to one of the less attractive album of the Motorpsycho and also because the most interesting part lies in the central improvisation. A live version, also from 2010, the immense Come On In weirdly stands in contemporary performances. taken from the unreachable Demon Box (1993) fails to match the incredible pathos of the devil's box, but it gives me memories of that hardly - I think - that can happen in a musical future, always desirable. It closes with Sheer Heart Attack, chosen by the drummer, never played before, which they can not remember the lyrics. A vaguely punk Queen ... would you never believe a thing!? If you're a fan of Motorpsycho you should buy the vinyl, but you must be pretty rich since the last auction on ebay hath been closed at 240 euros ... the record is not excellent but not to throw. For who has been knowing and following Motorpsycho for nearly twenty years, the review, though tiny, was a Must.

Motorpsycho - The Death Defying Unicorn (2012)

Cerchiamo di far capire cosa succede in The Death Defying Unicorn.

Reviewing an album of Motorpsycho is never easy. You never know what to expect. If we add that the  Norwegians 'boys' were among the best bands of the past twenty years (I speak of Motorpsycho first manner) it is complicated a little. From different parts this release was tagged as the most progressive of them - truly nourished - discography. We try to understand what happens in The Death Defying Unicorn. First of all was made with the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, Ola Kvernberg on violin and Ståle Storløkken of Supersilent, therefore, we can expect something to happen. Then go into that: 'Out of the Woods' is a styled soundtrack prelude of songs that will be, strings and trumpets chase nervous for about two and a half minutes. The job of the opening is to introduce 'The Hollow Lands' which refers to things of the first King Crimson then an inteludio introduces us to an audible voice, almost canterbury prog-style. Following an improvising guitar and then the voice. A nice groove, Motor-typical accompanies us. The musicians then have the ability to blend in an orchestral/instrumental semi-delirious that closes with a break where the violin and strings in general tell us that the piece is finished. 'Through the Veil' starts with a rhythmic/melodic sax game, goes to a quasi-stoner riff and flowing melodies in the typical Motor second manner style. Free jazz and orchestral influences (echoes of Kashmir) become predominant in the middle; you can imagine that the arches do what would a guitar do in Lobotomizer. Obviously, the piece is continuously stirred between more or less harmoniously moved moments, you can see  free and orchestral, Norwegian grooves and hints of rhythmical psychedelia. More velvety solutions come to my ears, either by 'Doldrums' that by the next 'Into the Gyre' where you can see echoes of Motorpsycho second manner, more relaxed, but not like last honey and smart pop things. In the ten minutes 'Into the Gyre' several successive moments of tension and resolution adopted now with the orchestra and now with the guitars and/or keyboards. The mood falls asleep up to 'Flotsam', almost dreamlike interpretation of the relaxation time. Since the entire album should be seen in concept optics, the sixth piece is instrumental to introduce 'Oh Proteus - A Prayer' where, hushed tones aside, you can hear the same arrangement of Demon Box underneath that dress with wisdom movements of a thousand instruments the game. 'Sculls in Limbo' might be a typical psycho/noise meandering of the Motor. Fine the dark atmospheres of 'The Lethe' sinking into greener horizons as the minutes passed, a mood well established in this record. In short, listening is not so easy but even that difficult. An album that tells us that Motorpsycho - never - been a band of puppets. An album where the more careful listener, will find echoes of things far removed, and the good times gone. Demanding a release that did not scare the Norwegians, who, although they can't now reach more than the pomp of the early years, are however really hard to kill.

My Brother the Wind - I Wash My Soul in the Stream of Infinity (2011)

My Brother the Wind - I Wash My Soul in the Stream of Infinity
(Transubstans Trans090 - 2011)

Completano la line-up Mathias Danielsson (guitar), Ronny Eriksson (bass) e Tomas Eriksson (drums). Giustamente inseriti in un contesto space/prog i quattro scandinavi propongono sei pezzi rilassati e rilassanti. Fire ! Fire !! Tracce di Amon Duul possono essere scorte here and there...The Mediator Between Head and Hands Must Be the Heart ricalca esattamente il mood immodificato che caratterizza il sound del presente platter. Idem per la finale I Wash My Soul in the Stream of Infinity.

The brothers of the wind come from Sweden and share the guitarist Nicklas Barker with the most popular Anekdoten, a known progressive band. Completing the line-up Mathias Danielsson (guitar), Ronny Eriksson (bass) and Tomas Eriksson (drums). Rightly placed in a space / prog, the four Scandinavian propose six relaxed and relaxing pieces. Fire! Fire! is an outstanding piece always seeming to solve any minute for 13 minutes, but it does not happen. The tension is always around the corner. Pagan Moonbeam is a 'short' acoustic tour and vaguely Eastern. Neither of the two songs gives us some important innovations. The album is well played. Traces of Amon Duul can be glimpsed here and there... The Mediator Between Head and Heart Hands Must Be The exact reflection of the unchanged mood characterizing the sound of this platter. The same hyper relaxed atmospheres can be found in the following  Torbjörn Abelli. However it is slightly more eventful Under Crimson Skies in which echoes of Amon Duul are back. With every passing minute song takes up the atmospheres of the previous narcotic steps, and doesn't differ from the intention already seen. Same for the final I Wash My Soul In The Stream of Infinity. In conclusion, a lackluster record, which leaves no room for interpretation whatsoever. Maybe a little 'too much' for our ears.

Dewolff - Orchards/Lupine (2011)

Dewolff - Orchards/Lupine (2011)
(REMusic 28024)

Benché in età impubere (o quasi), i tre in questione sembrano nati sessanta anni fa. Love in C Minor, ascoltatela e fatemi sapere. Ecco i King Crimson in Higher Than the Sun !

Dewolff are three Dutch young boys: Pablo van de Poel (guitar, lead vocals), Luka van de Poel (drums, vocals) and Robin Piso (Hammond, vocals, theremin). Authors of a self-titled EP in 2008, in 2009 the full-length 'Strange Fruits and Undiscovered Plants' should not to go unnoticed. Although they didn't reach the age of puberty (or almost), the three in question seem born sixty years ago. Totally fell in the psychoprog atmospheres of the 60ies present to us a well done job and 11 tracks really retrò. Already hearing the first track, compared to its predecessor of 2009, there is a conspicuous presence of keyboards at the expense of guitars and the result is an more 'progressive' album (the quotation marks want to hear it as a broad concept: it is not symphonic prog...). However, we must not make the mistake of believing that Dewolff be a clone of something that has been seen and re-seen thousands of times. The retro sound gives the chance of a personal composition inlaid in the sounds of progressive from the 60/70 years. Sweet atmospheres and Complex and almost-complex enveloping us like a d'essai movie. The third track gives us reverbs of keyboards of King Crimson. Fourth piece is on the go and I start to wonder if the pieces will continue to change feeling and be still valid as the latest heard. I'd be worried by that. I am very worried...the fifth piece explains to people how to write a successful song making it look easy. Love in C Minor, listen and let me know. Here King Crimson in Higher Than the Sun! Then the Cream, the Allman Brothers, etc.. In short, the disc is apparently derivative. Although at times, especially in the second part, the disc loses a little bit in intensity - paradoxically more in rock songs - the compositions here are worthy of close attention. A sort of personal reassessment of '68 ...

Hypnos 69 - Legacy

Hypnos 69 - Legacy (2010)
Elektrohasch (eh145)

'My Journey to the Stars' inizia non discostandosi dal feel appena ascoltato.

The Hypnos 69 are a band from Diest in Belgium. Active since 1994 have released five albums and several EPs and a pair of split with the German Coloue haze and the Swiss Monkey 3. Band basically voted to a nice progressive seasoned with psychedelia that we analyze in their last expression of 2010, that is the album named 'Legacy'. The platter consists of seven tracks including 3 that exceed ten minutes.
It starts with 'Requiem (For A Dying Creed)' which opens with a typical pattern
of a progressive-psychedelic jam. Guitars and keyboards rounding the main theme that offers the opportunity to Steve Houtmeyers's voice to confirm the first psychoprogresive impressions. Several breaks underlined by keyboards soften the song up to a guitar solo, which in turn leads to a time change/atmosphere more relaxed lines with arpeggios and flute lines a la King Crimson. Then background spoken vocals step in and even a sax of crimsony memory (as well as the accompaniment of the drums). This brings us to 8:00 minutes without particular effort. Guitar solos are not particularly lucky, just slightly uncertain in most distorted passages. The song returns to the main theme, not bad, but never overly exciting or over the top. The bass and keyboards have always a vintage flavour that after 12 minutes attend a nice job of voices, warm and relaxing. So the piece runs among guitar solos and synth licks that all emphase up to the end of the piece.
'An Aerial Architect' could be a nice piece of King Crimson in every way.
The proof of the pudding is in the eating. Nice is the central part with space flavour where the usual guitar, this time with a more round sound, describes solos and themes by a relaxing and pleasant arrangement, now more rock now more progressive. The beat and the mood of the two pieces is almost identical. 'My Journey to the Stars' begins not unlike the feel just heard. Diminished chords act as a bridge work to most liquid atmosphere, pleasant is the voice but the substance does not change, even with an interesting space ending, the King Crimson is always around the corner ...
'The Sad Destiny we Lament' should not make it difficult to understand the feel of the reader and the listener. Soft Moog atmospheres travel the strumming of an acoustic guitar on a 6/8 that 'slows' even more the feeling of the piece. A constant gray and discharged, accompanied by synth sweep, drag the song into morphined territories. 'The Empty Hourglass' renews the rhythm of the CD but substantially does not offer a new sensation, a new feel. Indeed, certain passages of guitar seem identical to others already heard in previous tracks, also because King Crimson insist forcefully with the result of repeating stale styles already at the fifth piece. 'Jerusalem', weirdly, nicely begins with a beat much more calm and psychedelic. In the second half it turns with rock guitars and twisted and suffered sax up to a crimsony pre-final we expected ...

'The Great Work'closes the album with its almost 19 minutes as fulfilment of a very placid album, often verbose and surely not having an its own personality . This last song is perhaps the best, even if the mark is one that runs from the beginning. May be taking this last one and changing some of the pieces before the album would have earned in personality. The mood of the platter is almost always identical to itself, the performance is not always impeccable and the choice of arrangements is too much heard yet. Albums not deplorable, but based on stylistic elements and constructs that have made the fortune of others.
