Ufomammut - Oro: Opus Primum (2012)

I piemontesi Ufomammut, che si sono sempre mostrati con i seguenti avatar: Urlo (vocals, bass, synthesizers), Poia (guitar, synthesizers), Vita (drums), Gara (keyboards, 1999), Alien (keyboards, 1999-2000), Flyeater (keyboards, 2000-03), Legof (keyboards, 2004-05), sono uno dei gruppi di punta della scena musicale, diciamo 'undergrund', italian. A torto o a ragione sono uno dei gruppi italiani più  conosciuti all'estero che si sia avventurato con successo nella scena che attraversa la psichedelia, il  doom, lo sludge e dintorni. L'ambientazione dei pezzi è stata, ora come allora, sempre appannaggio di toni grigi, atmosfere cupe e scelte che non esiterei a definire estreme. ORO: Opus Primum, pur  discostandosi dai lavori precedenti, mantiene quei tratti che lambiscono il mood quasi esotoerico,  mistico e non esattamente rivolto ad una educanda. Empireum ci piomba addosso con un tema di synth che volteggia sopra strumenti a corda molto distorti e compressi. Voci lontane ed interventi space a la Hawkwind divergono dal monolite chitarristico (e del basso). 14 minuti di psychedelia introspettiva che non lasciano scampo. Ottimo inizio. Segue Aureum, una sorta di medley tra i Melvins di Ozma e Grindstone dei Motorpsycho.  Qui il giro è più introverso, corto, portato ad intervalli stretti (tipico del trash metal, che però qui non ci azzecca una mazza...) sopra al quale insistono voci dantesche. Il brano sembra troppo introverso, rivolto a se stesso e privo dello slancio del precedente. Infearnatural continua sulla stessa falsariga e ci sorprende quando ci rendiamo conto che i minuti passano senza stancarci perché ti costringe all'ascolto, come se ci fosse la sensazione che qualcosa stesse per succedere, ma non succede nulla se si eccettuano piccole divergenze da synth. Magickon apre con lo stesso tema di tastiera della prima traccia quasi a voler sottolineare il concept dell'album. Proprio questi sono i brani più riusciti perché hanno una melodia ben definita da seguire. Le citate caratteristiche minimali si ritrovano continuamente nel lavoro degli Ufomammut, è una loro caratteristica, ma bisogna stare attenti che non si finisca per realizzare un lavoro autoreferente, caratterizzato quasi esclusivamente dallo stordimento mesmerico del suono in sé. La song scivola in Mindomine, il pezzo di chiusura di Opus Primum. In definitiva un platter non male ma neanche di rimarcabile fattura. Troppo compresso, troppo spesso autoreferente e troppo poco distante da ciò che siamo abituati a sentire dagli Ufomammut.

Rightly or wrongly they are one of the most famous Italian group abroad who has successfully ventured into the scene through psychedelia, doom, sludge and the surrounding area. The setting of the piece was, then and now, increasingly the preserve of gray tones, dark atmospheres and choices that I would not hesitate to define extreme. ORO: Opus Primum, but departed from previous works, it keeps those traits that lap the mood almost esotoeric, mystical and not exactly facing a schoolgirl. Empireum falls upon us with a synth theme that hovers over strings instruments very distorted and compressed. Distant voices and space touches a la Hawkwind plan to diverge from the monolith guitar (and bass). 14 minutes of introspective psychedelia that leave no escape. Great start. Follows Aureum, a sort of medley between the Melvins of Ozma and Grindstone from Motorpsycho. Here the riff is more introverted, short, resulted in narrow intervals (typical of thrash metal, but no guesses such a shit here), over which Dante voices insist. The song seems too introverted, direct to himself and without the momentum of the previous track. Infearnatural continues along the same lines and we are surprised when we realize that the minutes go by without getting tired because it forces you to listen, as if there was a feeling that something was about to happen, but nothing happens except for small different synth. Magickon opens with the same theme as the first track of the keyboard as if to emphasize the concept of the album. Suck songs are most successful because they have a well-defined melody to follow. The above minimum characteristics are found constantly in the work of Ufomammut, their main feature, but be careful not to realize a self-referential work, characterized almost exclusively by the stunning and mesmeric sound facing with itself. The song slips into Mindomine, the last piece of Opus Primum. Ultimately, a platter that is not bad but nothing of remarkable workmanship. Too compressed, too self-referential and too often not far from what we usually hear from Ufomammut.
