Small Stone SS-125
'Lilith' è sempre un rock and roll bello tirato in stile americano. 'At the Helm' ci regala una buona personalità.
The swedish Greenleaf, Oskar (vocals), Tommi Holappa (guitar), Bengt Backe (bass), Daniel Liden (drums), are linked in various ways with Dozer, Demon Cleaner and Truckfighters. We know, more or less what to expect. The first piece 'Jack Staff' begins with a theme of poorly played guitar (the same thing at 2'30"), simple rock with a tiny hint of psychedelic. The second track, 'Case of Fidelity', is a closer remembering of a stoner architecture but several american hard rock choruses remain, as ultra heard. 'Lilith' is always a nice shot of american styled rock and roll. I read reviews on the web discussing about stoner and psychedelia. Well, I am going ahead because I have not tracked down any of that so far. Certainly, if we just put a distortion guitar and 4 effects in series to talk about stoner psychedelia ...is another cuttle of fish...Fortunately 'Tree of Life' seems the most interesting piece so far, dark ambience and trusted psychedelic digressions give it an originality now's missing. At times they remind me of the british Gonga (may be the first song). Inevitably, at 3'30" the song seems to re-open to made in usa areas and then - immediately - revert to old settings already seen. 'Dreamcatcher' is instead a sort of cross between the two sides listened so far , but bringing more of the first kind. 'At the Helm' gives us a good personality. The sound is always the same but the melodies are really personal with appearance of keyboards that intrigue. More relaxed song, not bad. 'Sunken Ships' is listen with a more relaxed time and a phaser on the guitar, a sort of ballad...rather in 'The History Timeline' the distorted bass - as often happens here - open the riff. A summation of what has been seen so far, a rather American song shaping with a bit of swedish personalization a la Dozer. The title track that closes the album, is once again with keyboards and a slower pace with effected Hammond attached in the final part. Basically, a platter that is not bad but can not make a miracle.
