Tuber - Tuber ep (2010)

I believe is the first time that I write a review of songs available in digital only, without the aid of a label I mean. The greeks Tuber: Yannis Gerostathos - Guitars, Nikos Gerostathos - Drums, Paris Fragkos - Bass Guitar recorded this ep of 4 pieces at the Parallel Universe studios and are produced by their own drummer. This is a curious thing, we understand why reading these lines. Virtually unknown to most, according to the news that I was able to collect should be even from Crete (could you imagine a jam with the minotaur ?!...) the Tuber stands out from the first listen. Imagine a mix of post rock and psychedelia flavored with something personal. A clean guitar draws the opening melody to which the battery draws a simple but effective groove, a second guitar alternate to first clean guitar and together they chase parts more or less tense by changing the sound into distorted  according to the different moments. The delay on the guitars provides the whole suond, where are grafted space moments and other lapping stoner areas, without ever really reach them. Take the first two albums by Pharaoh Overlord add the more rock moments of the ep and imagine them relaxing in  space atmospheres and you have the Tuber. A pleasant discovery, also considered that the island of Crete has never been a hotbed of rock bands. Of course, the quality of distorted guitars is not the greatest and most importantly, the drums is more than a few times 'back' but the ep has its both a good dose of personality that a 'shot' easily addictive. We look forward to maybe a full-length product in a suited manner to the artistic level expressed.

Vespero - Subkraut: U-Boats Willkommen Hier (2012)

R.A.I.G. 2012 (ro073)

Arpeggiatore in evidenza in Target Selection, percussioni, divagazioni tastieristiche molto rilassanti.

Vespero band, Arkady Fedotov (bass, keyboards, vocals, flute), Valentin Rulev (violin), Ivan Fedotov (drums, percussion), Alexander Kuzovlev (guitar), Natalya Turina (vocals), Alexey Klabukov (keyboards) is a Russian band essentially psychedelic-improvisational music with space and kraut grain . They recorded for the russian R.A.I.G. records and confirm both the smooth-moving Russian music, with its clear focus of the underground room, both the good results achieved by the reviewed that coming to their seventh release, to which must be added the recent split with the german Zone Six (ie aka Dave Sula Bassana). The album, in which appear the following guest musicians: Ilya Semyonov / percussion, drums (2), Elena Belozyorova / arpeggiator (2), Alexei Esin / soprano sax (2.5), consists of 6 tracks rather long in which the keyboards reign supreme. The first two tracks are developed from a groove (the second most rhythmically) upon which all other instruments are independently playing: kraut style, a sort of Amon Duul less chaotic. The arpeggiator gives the timing, the guitar sings his notes, the sax is the same ... and so on until the end. The thing that makes me doubtful is the continuous repetition of the groove, which is identical to itself for the whole duration of the two pieces. Another synth starting song, this time in a sort of Berlin School style for Underwater. Always the percussions that corroborate the space ambience of the result travelling on a bass guitar ostinato. Arpeggiator featured in Target Selection, percussions, very relaxing keyboard digressions. In essence, the cd comes at the end with the exact same starting mood. Maybe a little too monotonous in its entirety, but a good album to have in your collection. This thime I can't find anything at youtube for you...sorry !

Hotel Wrecking City Traders & Gary Arce - same (2011)

Bro Fidelity Records (BroFi005) (vinyl only!)

Take two aussie guys of Melbourne and add Gary Arce of Yawning Man and you'll have the Hotel Wrecking City Traders & Gary Arce with a release that should not go unnoticed. From an architectural point of view one of the most interesting records of recent years. Imagine a path that brings together post-rock and psychedelia a la Motorpsycho, the most visionary and improvisational, and you only have one piece of the whole. You must add to the premise the weaver of horizontal melodies aka Toby (the other guitarist) and the drumming of Ben that rarely follows the beat but never describes anything for granted. Despite the presence of Gray at the guitars (the couple of the guitars is their strenght) there is no trace of stoner rock, contrary to what some reviewers wrote on the web. Or you play a super powerful blues with the bridge pickup or is not stoner. Spread the news, you never know might be useful to someone ... The structure of the pieces (only two) consists essentially of a continuous and mutual run of the guitars whose variable mood is underlined by an emphatic drumming. Here's how a disc should be in its structure. Personal by all the components and for the whole duration of the release. In essence, one guitar describes something beginning with a rhythmic and melodic playing - then - with the intervention of the other guitar and of the drums the songs get drama and relax as the mood of the musicians. All this, I think it's obvious, is a complete super-psychedelic mood. Buy it...cazzo!

Wight - Wight Weedy Wight (2011)

Fat&Holy (cd) Bilocation (LP/Kozmic Artifactz)

The germans Wight, who respond to the names of Rene (vocals, guitar), Peter (bass), Michael (drums), account for the Bilocation Records, which is a sub label of the teutonic Kozmic Artifactz have definitely attributes to distinguish themselves from the shapeless mass of bands that revel in the saturated seas of Stoner/Kraut/Jam/Doom/Retro since a long time. It starts by the guitar of 'Cosmic Rhythm # 1' and we are quickly projected in an analogue environment. Dirty and delayed guitar, filthy and muddy bass guitar, rhythmic drums from vintage reverbs and that typical 'breath' or of a dragged tape or by air from the microphone (the latter is the case). When you listen at 3:50 to the first guitar themes/solos you are reminded of their nights in the cellar or in the rehearsal room where the drummer remained perpetually 'behind the timing' and the melody of the guitar was almost uncertain. The final part of the song vaguely resembles the final part of Sidereal Connection from Void Generator, but with fewer results. The following 'All Beyond the Piend of Being' turns into a sort of sabbathdoom complete with a nice wah guitar. Very beautiful voice of Rene and his beautiful environment but also nice is the following part with echo coming in and out into bigger sounding guitars turning the song on and off as needed with space hints. The song is definitely good. 'Let Me Know When You Found God' is a sort of homage to Witchcraft but does not achieve the magnificence with its guitar solo that is not quite good as its predecessor. Same mood and almost the same duration for the next 'Weedy Wight Wight' that in the middle has very nice space passages and still valuable. Follows 'Shaman Woman' that, although not very original, turns into an heavy psych nuances where the voice of Rene is back in the chair. Last song is 'Hammer Boogie' which moves in the middle of a doom mood and an amazing boogie rock with a surprising sax solo! The platter certainly would be improved by a point of view of homogeneity, but is certainly valid. One group that should have a greater use of Rene's voice (who also founded the Fat & Holy Records from which the CD) and the most welcome surprises may arise.

Ufomammut - Oro: Opus Primum (2012)

Neurot (cd) - Supernatural Cat (cat012LP)

Ufomammut, from a region of the north named Piemonte, who have always shown with the following avatar: Scream (vocals, bass, synthesizers), Poia (guitar, synthesizers), Vita (drums), Race (keyboards, 1999), Alien (keyboards, 1999-2000) , Flyeater (keyboards, 2000-03), Legof (keyboards, 2004-05), are one of the leading groups on the italian 'underground' music scene. Rightly or wrongly they are one of the most famous Italian group abroad who has successfully ventured into the scene through psychedelia, doom, sludge and the surrounding area. The setting of the piece was, then and now, increasingly the preserve of gray tones, dark atmospheres and choices that I would not hesitate to define extreme. ORO: Opus Primum, but departed from previous works, it keeps those traits that lap the mood almost esotoeric, mystical and not exactly facing a schoolgirl. Empireum falls upon us with a synth theme that hovers over strings instruments very distorted and compressed. Distant voices and space touches a la Hawkwind plan to diverge from the monolith guitar (and bass). 14 minutes of introspective psychedelia that leave no escape. Great start. Follows Aureum, a sort of medley between the Melvins of Ozma and Grindstone from Motorpsycho. Here the riff is more introverted, short, resulted in narrow intervals (typical of thrash metal, but no guesses such a shit here), over which Dante voices insist. The song seems too introverted, direct to himself and without the momentum of the previous track. Infearnatural continues along the same lines and we are surprised when we realize that the minutes go by without getting tired because it forces you to listen, as if there was a feeling that something was about to happen, but nothing happens except for small different synth. Magickon opens with the same theme as the first track of the keyboard as if to emphasize the concept of the album. Suck songs are most successful because they have a well-defined melody to follow. The above minimum characteristics are found constantly in the work of Ufomammut, their main feature, but be careful not to realize a self-referential work, characterized almost exclusively by the stunning and mesmeric sound facing with itself. The song slips into Mindomine, the last piece of Opus Primum. Ultimately, a platter that is not bad but nothing of remarkable workmanship. Too compressed, too self-referential and too often not far from what we usually hear from Ufomammut.

Torso - Inside (2012)

Stone Free Records

Torso consist of four Austrian guys - who respond to the names of Michael Jandrisevits - Guitar, Vocals, Bernhard Garger - Vocals, Guitar, Klaus Gulyas - Drums and Thomas Pint - Bass, who, although not represent a miracle, deserve our attention. Imagine a quasi-stoner base with more European voice frames and thematic lines strongly influenced by root rock, add something of jam approaching and even some purely personal approach, which fortunately they put in the platter, and you'll have the Torso. The Austrians are not particularly 'strong and heavy' but manage to make an impression of your own point of view without going to a nonsensical copy and therefore without crawling into a cauldron of band now called stoner, heavy psych or whatever you want. Mind you, the plots and the results are certainly room for improvement, especially from the point of view of the musical dynamic, but we're not listening the usual group of agitated stoner-like clones of 3/4 groups who for twenty years (and I mean 20!) play the same notes. It 'sa bit like a classic rock band 40 years ago is now gathering inevitably express the mood in the meantime escaped.

Stoned Jesus - Seven Thunders Roar (2012)

Moon MR 5401-2 IM 021

Dispiace perché la personalità affiora here and there...'Indian' sembra un pezzo prog...si, prog ! O no ?!

We can not always review bands comin' from the usual 5/6 countries, except Italy. The Ukrainians Stoned Jesus [Sid (bass), Vadim (drums), Igor "Prog-Jester" Sidorenko (guitar, vocals)] reach their second album titled Seven Thunders Roar thanks to the Moon, the ukranian label of Kiev. Most of the 'music employees' calls them stoner metal (what the f**** will ever be...). Personally, I remember their first job as not excellent but not to throw away. The first track 'Bright Like the Morning' does not convince me: too childish, not well played and where the rhythm section has a heavy responsibility in terms of groove. The second track 'Electric Mistress' leads us instead into doom territories where we find the analogy with the piece just finished. The melodic idea is not bad, but the implementation leaves a little 'done'. The voice is not convincing, the mix either, but it's the playing in general that's too bad. I am really sorry because the personality emerges here and there ... 'Indian' ... it seems a bit prog, yes prog! I know it's strange, but true. At about 1:00 Indian goes to sixties environments. Here you can find The Idea, 'there are no saints' (loool). 'I'm the Mountain' is an acoustic track (so it would seem to me more a prog band than a stoner metal...stoner metal ... ... mah!?) that turns with every passing second. It becomes electric and distorted and then falls down again, but differently. Well, if a guy is named Igor "Prog-Jester" Sidorenko there is a reason. Or not! Guys, the song is good. It has its own autonomy and balanced. The instruments are out of tune but the piece is consistent. The rhythm section is playing the surf over the timing but it all comes anyway. The mix of the various instruments seems did by the gas station man... but 200 groups more like that are really welcome, so instead of the usual hackneyed. To the chagrin of many reviewers either 'Stormy Monday' is not a stoner metal piece. It is not easy to make you understand what exactly the Stoned Jesus are doing because - fortunately - they sound a little on their own f*** businness, with their own style, vaguely prog, vaguely grunge. In essence, we have the foundations. What is most important - being yourself - they do not miss it. They would need a 'performance' school, music school, in short. He either lacks only a producer to coordinate everything and it would definitely a nice hearing.

Motorpsycho - Strings of Stroop: Live at Effenaar (2011)

May 7, 1999, track A2: April 21, 2000, tracks B1 and B2: May 23, 2010.

Due to the substantial unavailability of the hereby vinyl recordered to celebrate 40 years of Effenaar, I'm going to review this disc - released only on vinyl - Strings of Stroop that contains 5 live tracks recorded in Holland in different periods. Limited edition of 500 units, which reached the market quotations out of the common sense, has the following dating tracklist: A1 Track: May 7, 1999, track A2: April 21, 2000, tracks B1 and B2: May 23, 2010. The tracciaB3 that does not appear on the cover, is May 4, 2006 and is a cover of Queen (from News of the World, 1977).
It starts with Psychonaut (from Trust Us, 1998) that gives us the 'usual' Norwegians ramblings left with plenty of room for improvisation. We continue with Go To California from 2000 (Phanerothyme 2001), the smart-pop version of the Motor. Beautiful proof of the ensemble with voices harmonized with care even during a live set.
It follows Whole Lotta Diana (from Child of the Future 2009) that - it seems - the less successful song of the platter, perhaps because it belongs to one of the less attractive album of the Motorpsycho and also because the most interesting part lies in the central improvisation. A live version, also from 2010, the immense Come On In weirdly stands in contemporary performances. taken from the unreachable Demon Box (1993) fails to match the incredible pathos of the devil's box, but it gives me memories of that hardly - I think - that can happen in a musical future, always desirable. It closes with Sheer Heart Attack, chosen by the drummer, never played before, which they can not remember the lyrics. A vaguely punk Queen ... would you never believe a thing!? If you're a fan of Motorpsycho you should buy the vinyl, but you must be pretty rich since the last auction on ebay hath been closed at 240 euros ... the record is not excellent but not to throw. For who has been knowing and following Motorpsycho for nearly twenty years, the review, though tiny, was a Must.

Vibravoid - Gravity Zero (2012)

Sulatron st121

The german Vibravoid are back again with the german Sulatron and, after the live show at Burg Herzberg Festival 2011, will present their new work 'Zero Gravity'. First song is super psychedelic 'Gravitation Zero' with repeated sampling leading to a vaguely retro and enjoyable groove typical of Vibravoid. The groove and the rhythmical section do not change at the next 'No Silver Bird' which, however, we can enjoy it with an exaggerated guitar tremolo. A synth oscillator opens a 'Photosynthesis in Darkness' but the 'shot' of the song remains the same, very nice chorus, easily and effectively with drums that appears almost electronic. After the kraut digression of 'Travelling Without Moving' here you are 'Eruptions of the Green Sun' which sounds like an excerpt of the previous album, a classic of the '60s psychedelic. 'Shotgun Wedding' with its tremolo, the sitar like arrangement and the keyboards with dark raga shades environments do echoes of reverberations from the '80s. persistent is the tremolo effect also found in the following 'Get Out of Here', just the same mood begins to come too often, and drums blatantly '80s does not help the usability of the piece. By now it was clear, delay and opening tremolo even at the beginning of 'The White Ship' ... 'Brainplane' distances himself from somewhat the previous mood instead, a sort of dream ... speech echo tape brought into overdrive and a congeries of kraut style sounds in the middle of the piece give way to this beautiful dreamy composition. If you know the Düsseldorf School, then you immediately know what can happen in 'La Vie en Düsseldorf'. Closes 'Radiation Zero' (these last two songs as bonus tracks on CD). It takes 4 minutes and 30 seconds for the opening steps of kraut 'Radiation Zero' leave the field to a few notes true, but not be deceived, we are in a fully old style krautrock. In short, a good album, perhaps with some unnecessary repetition of the '80s groove too, and usually too self-identical in the first part of the platter, but surely there are interesting ideas for lovers of more extreme psychedelia.
